No Injuries In Interstate 595 Truck Accident

In a scenario nothing short of a miracle, no one was injured in a recent truck accident on Interstate 595 that ended up with the truck’s cab hanging off the side of the highway’s off-ramp as the trailer laid on the ground below it. According to reports, the truck was carrying a load of sand and, as a result of the crash, the truck’s diesel gas was spilled on the road. Somehow the driver escaped injury and, despite the timing of the crash during rush hour, no other vehicles were involved. Officials note that it appeared that the rollover crash resulted from the driver taking the turn at too fast a rate of speed.

Vehicle Type One Of Most Important Factors In Rollover Crash Causation

Though just about any vehicle could potentially roll over during an accident, certain vehicle types are more prone to rolling over than others. In particular, in single-vehicle rollover crashes, vehicles that are tall or top heavy, which means they have a higher center of gravity, are more likely to topple over and roll than others that are lower to the ground, which gives those types of cars a lower center of gravity. So, for example, it is more likely that, during a single-vehicle crash, a van would roll over than a sedan, coupe, or similar passenger vehicle.  Another top cause of rollover crashes is, as seems to be at issue in the Interstate 595 accident case, speed.

Protective Measures Shown To Increase Rollover Crash Safety

While the driver of this rolled truck was quite lucky to have suffered no injuries – and to have not caused any injuries to others with whom he shared the road, this outcome is certainly an anomaly. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute, rollovers may happen only rarely, but when they do, more often than not they result in fatalities. The Institute notes that stronger roofs on a vehicle go a long way towards protecting occupants of a vehicle involved in a rollover crash. In addition, electronic stability control, or ESC, is effective in reducing the chance that a vehicle will roll over during skidding and loss of control that often occurs in an auto accident. This technology has been made a requirement for passenger vehicles in just the last few years.
