Ft. Lauderdale, FL - Two Dead, Several Hurt in Chopper Crash at 6th Ave

Fort Lauderdale, FL (September 2, 2023) – A Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue chopper crashed in North Lauderdale earlier this week, prompting a police response, and officials have since released additional details in connection with the accident.

After crashing into an apartment building, the helicopter’s two occupants were wounded, and one passenger was killed, according to officials.

The helicopter had just taken off from Pompano Air Park at around 8:40 a.m. on Monday, responding to a complaint about a car crash in North Lauderdale in which a vehicle had struck a bus stop at the intersection of Prospect Road and State Road 7. The BSFR helicopter’s engine failed immediately after takeoff, three minutes later.

The helicopter eventually crashed into the building at 1201 NW 6th Avenue. At least two apartments were completely burned to the ground because of the incident.

Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony confirmed at a press conference shortly after 1:00 p.m. that a Captain/Flight Paramedic had been killed in the accident. A female tenant of the property was also confirmed to have died.

Around 11:00 a.m., BSO Public Information Officer Veda Coleman-Wright spoke to the media to confirm that the NTSB would be sending investigators to the scene, in addition to the FAA’s presence there to assist with the investigation.

Officials from Pompano Beach Fire Rescue reported they also rescued two injured building occupants. Six individuals were taken to Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach, though none of them had life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing in the meantime.

Our deepest condolences go out to the deceased victims. Our thoughts go out to the injured victims and their families.
