Deadly Three-Vehicle Collision on Highway 301

CarFire

Alcohol and excessive speed are among the leading causes of fatal car accidents, but the proximate events that lead to fatal injuries can happen even in the absence of those factors. People are much more likely to die in car accidents if they get ejected from the vehicle than if they stay inside. That is what people mean when they say that seatbelts save lives, and it was true even before the introduction of airbags as a car safety feature further improved the survival rate. Simply remaining inside the car after a collision, until first responders arrive to render medical treatment, or unless you are sure that you are uninjured enough to walk to the other car and see if others are hurt, increases your chance of survival, unless, of course, the car catches on fire. Cars can burst into flames if certain parts of the car sustain the impact. If you got injured in a traffic accident where one or more of the vehicles caught fire, contact a Fort Lauderdale auto accident attorney.

SUV Caught Fire After Car Struck It Head On

Just after midnight one weekend in January 2026, a young woman lost control of her car and ended up in a chain reaction collision. The driver, whom the Tampa Free Press site said was 22 years old and a resident of Brandon, was driving on US-301 in Hillsborough County. Just north of the intersection with Jackson Road, she crossed the center lane and crashed into the front bumper of an SUV. The impact caused both cars to spin. The Camaro ended up in the northbound lanes, where the driver had originally been driving, but the SUV spun to the far side of the southbound lanes. While the Camaro was immobilized in the northbound lanes, a Toyota Camry struck it.

By the time first responders arrived, the SUV had caught fire. They were able to remove the driver of the SUV, but not the passenger. The Tampa Free Press identified the driver as a 64-year-old man from New York and the passenger, who did not survive, as his wife.

The drivers of all three vehicles were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their injuries were not life-threatening. The driver of the Camry was a 31-year-old man from Ruskin. News sources did not release the names of any of the people involved in the accident.

When the most recent news reports about the collision were published, the accident was still under investigation. They did not indicate whether any of the drivers faced criminal charges in connection to the accident. Even if no one gets criminal charges, the injured people and the husband of the woman who died have the right to file personal injury or wrongful death lawsuits against the responsible parties in civil court.
