Healthy Hummus Turned Harmful

Fans of Trader Joe’s hummus will have to do without a few of their favorite flavors as a result of a recent recall of two specific flavors of the popular chain’s products. The two flavors have been found to be at risk of contamination with listeria, a dangerous  and potentially deadly bacteria. Those who have purchased the affected products have been urged to throw them out or to return them to the store to obtain a refund of purchase price; so far no reports of injuries have been made, and hopefully the issue was caught early enough to prevent any injuries from happening.

The Dangers Of Listeria Contamination

Though listeria is quite common, only a small percentage of people exposed to the bacteria actually fall ill as a result. Those who are most susceptible to the dangers include those with weakened immune systems, older people, pregnant mothers, and unborn children. It is especially a concern for pregnant women, as in infection during pregnancy can cause harm to the unborn child, including its death. Symptoms of listeriosis, the condition caused by listeria, include flu-like symptoms such as achiness, chills, fever, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting; typically within five to ten days the symptoms subside. Those who develop invasive listeriosis, which occurs when the bacteria enters the bloodstream from the intestines and invades the organs, can experience a range of medical issues such as meningitis or bloodstream infection.

Prevention Is The Best Medicine

Treatment for those who become affected by listeria generally includes a course of antibiotics. Preventing it in the first place, however, is an even better solution. Particularly for those who are most at risk, food hygiene is imperative. It is recommended that those who are most at risk should stay away from certain types of foods including soft cheese, ready-to-eat foods that are not heated prior to consumption, refrigerated smoked seafood, and raw/unpasteurized milk or products made with it. For other types of foods, proper preparation and storage is important to lessen the chances of suffering illness due to listeria. Washing and drying foods prior to cooking and consumption, keeping a clean kitchen workspace, properly cooking meats to the appropriate temperatures, and preventing cross-contamination by keeping foods such as raw meat separate from produce are all important steps for keeping food safe.
