Woman Dies After Roller Coaster Ride at Universal Orlando Resort

AmusementWorker

Children, love birds, and people under the influence of MDMA or LSD tend to look back fondly on their experiences at the theme parks of Orlando. For everyone else, a Florida theme park vacation is fraught with stress. Floridians above the age of 20 only visit the parks because they involve a shorter road trip than other destinations of a similar price point. Even if everything goes according to plan, the financial pain of an Orlando theme park vacation, even if the taste of those Mickey Mouse ice cream bars, two parts gas station ice cream to one part pure magic, make it all worthwhile. There is someone out there who is still suffering from plantar fasciitis after standing in line for Thunder Mountain all afternoon years ago, and someone who owes years of alimony payments because his theme park vacation showed him in vivid detail that his ex-wife’s temper really was too much, as she reacted noticeably worse than all the other mothers who were dealing with the same frustrations. Of course, if your theme park nightmare ends when you wake up at home after your vacation, you are one of the lucky ones. Several people have died, and more have suffered severe injuries, on amusement park rides in Orlando in the past year. If you got injured while riding a roller coaster in Florida, contact a Fort Lauderdale premises liability lawyer.

Incident on the Revenge of the Mummy Roller Coaster Is the Latest of Many Tragedies at Florida Theme Parks

Universal Epic Universe has been in the news frequently in the past few months, and usually for the wrong reasons. Universal has faced five lawsuits about the Stardust Racers rollercoaster, including one by the family of a man who suffered a medical emergency while the ride was in progress and was pronounced dead shortly after the ride ended. These lawsuits also name Mack, the company that made the rollercoaster, as a defendant.

The most recent incident involves the Revenge of the Mummy, a rollercoaster ride that takes place entirely indoors, much like Space Mountain at Disney’s Magic Kingdom. The ride includes a 39-foot drop, and the rollercoaster reaches speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. A 70-year-old woman rode the rollercoaster on November 25, and when the ride ended, the woman was unresponsive. She was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. News reports did not release her name.

Premises liability laws protect guests at theme parks from injuries caused by unsafe conditions at the park, including dangerous rides. Defendants in premises liability lawsuits often argue that the plaintiff’s injuries were caused by pre-existing health issues, not dangerous conditions. In the case of rollercoasters, theme park staff should make informed decisions about whether it is safe for a guest with health risks and to take appropriate precautions if applicable, such as by securing the guest’s wheelchair properly.
