Which Florida Cities are the Most Dangerous for Drivers?

Highway

Florida has some of the busiest roadways in the U.S., so it should come as no surprise that it also ranks among the most dangerous in the country when it comes to car accidents. For instance, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FHSMV) estimates that there were as many as 394,230 car accidents in Florida in 2023 alone. This problem has largely been attributed to increasing congestion on Florida’s roads, as well as an outdated infrastructure that can’t keep up with the number of commercial vehicles and passenger cars that use the state’s highways. Some cities, however, have proven more dangerous than others when it comes to vehicle collisions.

Tampa

Tampa was recently named as having the tenth most dangerous driving conditions in the country due to the number of accidents that occur on local roadways in that area. The Tampa Bay region consists of eight counties, where more than 80,000 car accidents occurred in 2023. Sadly, an estimated 56,883 of those accidents resulted in an injury to the parties involved.

Jacksonville

As the largest city in Florida, Jacksonville has some of the busiest roads in the state, which in turn, significantly increases the number of accidents that happen on those roadways. Following close behind Tampa on the country’s list of most dangerous cities in which to drive in the U.S., Jacksonville was ranked number 14. According to the FLHSMV, there were more than 34,000 car accidents in the seven counties that make up the Jacksonville metropolitan area in 2023 alone.

Fort Lauderdale

As another of the state’s most populous cities, Fort Lauderdale sees its own fair share of traffic and roadway congestion. Last year, Broward County, where Fort Lauderdale is located, saw 40,175 car accidents, more than 30,000 of which resulted in an injury.

Orlando

Seminole County, where Orlando is located, also regularly tops the list of the most dangerous places to drive in the state. As home to some of the most popular tourist attractions in the U.S., including Disney World, Orlando sees millions of visitors every year, meaning that traffic has become a serious problem. Unfortunately, this increasing congestion on Orlando’s roadways has led to an increase in car accidents, with a total of 43,688 crashes occurring in Orlando’s four counties last year.

These are by no means the only cities where accidents happen in Florida. In fact, Florida has seen an increasing number of collisions across the state for more than a decade. While municipal agencies and safety experts have made attempts to update Florida’s dated infrastructure, adding safer interchanges and more lanes on highways, these accidents continue to occur at an unprecedented rate. If you or a loved one were injured in such an accident, you could be entitled to compensation for your losses, either from your insurer, from a negligent driver, or from another at-fault third party.
