Vehicle Safety Features that Help Prevent Car Accidents

Autopilot2

Although airbags and seat belts have been in use for decades and prevent thousands of injuries and deaths every year, new technologies are also constantly being introduced that play a crucial role in preventing car crashes. Unfortunately, despite these advancements, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians are still injured in collisions on a daily basis. To learn more about which safety features can help protect you from an accident or to discuss your options after a crash, you should speak with a car accident attorney who can assist you.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Most modern vehicles have cruise control. However, a new adaptive version takes this technology a step further. Rather than resetting your speed based on traffic conditions, adaptive cruise control uses radar, lasers, and cameras to assess how close the vehicle in front of your car is and then adjusts the speed to maintain a proper distance between vehicles. When conditions change and allow a car to speed up, the system will accelerate. All of this requires no input from the driver.

Lane Departure Alerts

The lane departure alert system sounds an alarm when a car swerves out of a lane without using a turn signal, which can prove crucial to preventing accidents caused by fatigued driving. In most cases, lane departure alert systems don’t take full control of a vehicle or keep a person from driving, but instead use cameras to monitor lane markings and detect when a car has drifted too far and then issue an audio, visual, or other alert warning. However, some newer systems use even more advanced technology that includes a prevention feature in addition to the alert, which automatically steers a car back into its proper lane. These systems prevent a number of different kinds of crashes, including accidents in which a vehicle rolls over after leaving the road, one car sideswipes another traveling in the same direction, or one vehicle collides with another vehicle traveling the other way.

Blind Spot Monitoring

Another important vehicle safety feature that helps prevent hundreds of accidents in Florida every year is blind spot monitoring. This type of monitoring system helps gives drivers a better view of surrounding conditions by providing an alert when a car enters into a blind spot. This in turn, allows drivers to change lanes or reverse more safely.

Cross-Traffic Alerts

Cross-traffic alerts use sensors and cameras to detect when vehicles are approaching another car from the side. Like blind spot monitoring, these systems sound an alert if nearby traffic could lead to an accident, either because the driver failed to check for an approaching vehicle or couldn’t see around a corner.
