Universal Studios Theme Park Accidents

ThemePark

The Universal Studios theme park opened in Orlando to much fanfare in the summer of 1990. Amidst multiple Disney theme parks, Universal Studios was something different. Its brand messaging set it apart from the Disney theme parks which, it implied, were for kids, as well as for simple-minded innocents who happened to be old enough to work full-time and rent cars. If you wanted real thrills, real adventures, you would come to Universal Studios. The scariest thing that can happen to you at the Magic Kingdom is that steep drop on Splash Mountain or the realization that the stuff you have just exchanged for mouse-eared souvenirs is U.S. currency that you earned with the work of your own hands. The ghosts in the Haunted Mansion are silly, rather than scary. Meanwhile, at Universal Studios, a huge animatronic gorilla would roar in your face and then throw the subway car you were riding in into the abyss, and if you wanted to calm down by sitting in the air conditioning after that, then you could go to the Hitchcock theater, where you could put on your 3-D glasses and feel what Janet Leigh felt when she filmed the shower scene in Psycho. Universal Studios, in its early days, was not for the faint of heart. If you visited Universal Studios as a child in the 1990s and it scared the daylights out of you, rest assured that it has changed a lot. The only original ride that was still going strong 30 years after the theme park opened was the E.T. Adventure, but by 2020, it had seen better days. If you got injured by a malfunctioning theme park ride, contact a Fort Lauderdale premises liability lawyer.

Child Gets Injured Disembarking From E.T. Adventure Ride

Like many theme park rides built in the 1980s and 1990s, the E.T. Adventure ride transports passengers on a car attached to a track, and passengers get on and off the ride when the car stops at a platform resembling a train station platform. In the case of the E.T. Adventure ride; each car is a flat board with twelve stationary bicycles on it. Tiago Perez visited Universal Orlando with his family in early 2020, when he was 11 years old. The family lives in Brazil, and Portuguese is the only language in which they are proficient.

When Tiago was getting off the ride to get back onto the platform, his foot got stuck between the car and the platform. He suffered multiple fractures in his toes, foot, and legs. He eventually made a full recovery, but he had to wear a cast for more than six weeks. His family sued Universal Studios Florida for premises liability.
