Inner Tube Accidents

InnerTube

The inflatable inner tube is a stable raft that can keep children or adults afloat in the water, whether it is in a swimming pool, on a waterslide, or on a lake or river. Riding an inner tube seems like one of the safest water activities you can do. You are less likely to get injured while inner tubing than you are while water skiing, parasailing, or diving. Despite this, water recreation carries its share of risks, no matter the activity. If you get injured in a water recreation activity, the available legal remedies vary according to where and why the accident happened. Premises liability laws enable injured people to sue business owners for damages if they get injured in an accident resulting from unsafe conditions at the place of business. Therefore, you have the right to file a premises liability lawsuit if you get injured at a water theme park or public swimming pool where you pay admission. Premises liability laws also protect you if you get injured on a boating expedition operated by a tour boat company. If you are swimming, inner tubing, or otherwise engaging in water recreation without paying admission, even if it is on privately owned land, recreational land use statutes prevent you from filing a premises liability lawsuit. If you got injured in an inner tube accident in Florida, contact a Fort Lauderdale premises liability lawyer.

Lazy Rivers Are Not Always as Peaceful as They Seem

A lazy river is a shallow artificial river where people ride slowly in inner tubes. An artificial current propels the tubes along. It is one of the least risky water recreation activities, but accidents have happened where people have fallen out of their inner tubes and gotten trapped under closely spaced tubes and been unable to reach the surface of the water. Children should be accompanied by adults when riding inner tubes on a lazy river.

High-Speed Inner Tube Recreation Carries the Same Risks as Other Motorized Watercraft Activities

The riskiest inner tube activities involve inner tubes towed by motorized watercraft such as jet skis. In June 2025, three children visited their grandparents at their lake house in Putnam County. An adult was riding a Sea-Doo jet ski, towing an inner tube, and the children were riding in the tube. The jet ski collided with a dock, and the three children fell in the water. The eight-year-old died of injuries sustained in the accident. As of the time of the most recent news reports about the accident, the 13-year-old and the 11-year-old were still hospitalized, and their injuries were not considered life-threatening. The news reports did not indicate whether the adult riding the jet ski was a family member of the children in the inner tube.
