Deerfield Beach, FL - Multi-Vehicle Pedestrian-Involved Crash Takes One Life on N Dixie Hwy

Deerfiled Beach, FL (May 18, 2021) – Officers with the Broward Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating the circumstances of a multi-vehicle accident that occurred on a roadway in Deerfield Beach. The crash left one pedestrian dead on Friday, May 14.

According to reports, the wreck occurred at approximately 10:23 a.m. on the North Dixie Highway. Information from primary investigations reveals that John Burgess, 59, of Deerfield Beach, was headed south in the far right lane of the roadway in a 1999 Ford F-150 pickup truck. He was coming up on Northeast 51st Street when a pedestrian was headed south on the sidewalk along the west side of the roadway.

Burgess’s vehicle, for some reason, left the roadway and traveled up onto the sidewalk. The passenger side of his truck struck the pedestrian and threw him backward. The victim’s body struck the side of a 2005 Jeep Laredo SUV and then over the hood of the Jeep into a swale on the other side of the vehicle.

Burgess’ Ford kept traveling southwest where it struck a Dodge Ram, a Lexus, and a GMC. It then struck a utility pole which toppled over onto the Dodge and the Lexus. Burgess attempted to flee the scene of the crash but was detained a short distance from the scene.

Police continue to investigate the details of the collision. The pedestrian was transported to an area medical center where they later died from their injuries. Their identity has not been released at this time.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with everyone involved and affected by this accident in Deerfield Beach.

Pedestrian Collisions in Florida

According to statistics, a fatal pedestrian accident in Florida is reported about once every two hours. Annually, this means that more than 500 people are killed in pedestrian accidents across our state each year. Additionally, when the pedestrian survives the crash, they are likely to suffer severe and debilitating injuries which will require a long and extensive recovery. Pedestrians have no protection from the force and impact of a crash and are far more likely to be seriously hurt compared to victims of other types of accidents. In many cases, the pedestrian will be injured or killed due to the actions of a negligent driver.

Under Florida law, injured pedestrians or their families may have a claim for compensation when they have been affected by an accident. If your loved one was killed, our condolences are with you. There is nothing more devastating than the loss of a family member following an accident. Family members and next of kin can file for wrongful death when their loved one was killed in a crash. These claims should only be handled by an attorney with substantial experience in the area.
