Concussions Are Worse Than They Sound

Concussion2

In old cartoons, it is funny when a character gets a bump on the head from a falling object and sees stars, and then everything goes back to normal in the next scene. In real life, concussions are no laughing matter. They are intensely painful, and even though you eventually recover, it takes weeks or months before you feel like your normal self again. To make matters worse, there is little you can do to treat the symptoms of concussion; you must simply wait them out. This is difficult, when all you can do is lie silently in a dark room, where anything that could possibly take your mind off your intense headache and nausea would also make it worse. Your best hope is for a true friend to sit in the dark room, hold your hand, and converse quietly with you, and tell you stories that are enough to make you smile, but not enough to make you laugh out loud, because doing so would worsen the pain. That is not even the worst thing about concussions. The worst thing is that every subsequent concussion builds on the previous ones. If you have suffered a concussion in a car accident, regardless of whether it was your first concussion, contact a Fort Lauderdale auto accident attorney.

The Difference Between a Concussion and a Traumatic Brain Injury Is a Matter of Semantics

A concussion is an injury to the brain; it happens when something strikes your head with enough force to jostle your brain inside your skull. In other words, it is a traumatic brain injury. Traumatic brain injury proper, known as TBI, is a separate medical diagnosis from concussion, but really they are the same injury. The only difference is severity. The injury is a concussion if you did not lose consciousness, or if you lost consciousness only briefly, and if there are only brief gaps in your memory of what happened on the day of the injury before and after you got injured. The injury fits the diagnostic criteria for TBI if you were unconscious for more than a few minutes, and if there is an entire 24-hour period around the time of the injury of which you have little or no memory.

Getting Justice After a Concussion Caused by Someone Else’s Negligence

If you get more than one concussion, you risk experiencing lingering symptoms that mimic the symptoms of more severe TBI, such as chronic headaches, impaired memory, or disturbances in behavior and mood. If the cause of your injury was someone else’s negligence, you have the right to seek damages by filing a personal injury lawsuit or insurance claim. If you have had more than one concussion, it is more complicated to persuade the court or insurance company of which of your symptoms are due to the most recent concussion as opposed to old injuries.
