Car accident injuries can range in seriousness from mild to severe, with some resulting in permanent disability, or in tragic cases, even death. To learn more about your legal options following your own car accident, please contact an experienced Fort Lauderdale auto accident attorney who is familiar with Florida’s no-fault auto insurance laws and can advise you accordingly.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Of the many types of injuries that a car accident victim can sustain, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are amongst the most common and potentially serious. Traumatic brain injuries are usually the result of a sudden blow or jolt to the head, or a penetrating injury, both of which are not uncommon in car accidents. TBI symptoms can range in severity, but the most common include:

  • A loss of consciousness;
  • Dizziness or blurry vision;
  • Nausea or vomiting;
  • Mood swings or behavioral changes;
  • Fluid draining from the ears and nose;
  • Memory loss; and
  • Difficulty with motor functions.

The types of symptoms that a person experiences will depend in large part on the severity of their head trauma, which can only be determined through a series of tests and examinations.

Whiplash Injuries

Whiplash is another common injury that stems from car accidents and occurs when the head is thrown quickly forwards and backwards or from side to side upon impact. This movement can strain the muscles and ligaments in the neck, which can lead to pain, headaches, stiffness, and reduced mobility for anywhere from a few days to a few months. In severe cases, whiplash symptoms may even linger for years after an accident.

Lacerations and Burns

Although many of the injuries sustained by car accident victims relate directly to the impact of the collision, others are the result of broken windows, ejection from the vehicle, or an engine fire. Cuts from broken windows and coming into contact with pavement or car parts in particular, can cause serious lacerations and significant blood loss. Burns, on the other hand, if severe enough, could require surgery, skin grafting, a high risk of infection, and months of recuperation in the hospital, all of which are often followed by permanent scarring or disfigurement.

Chest and Abdominal Injuries

The impact of a vehicle collision can result in a number of different injuries, including chest and abdominal injuries and internal bleeding. Although chest injuries often take the form of bruises and contusions, they could also be as severe as broken ribs or internal injuries. For instance, the impact of a serious collision could rupture or tear the diaphragm or injure the liver, kidneys, spleen, or internal organs, all of which usually require surgery to stem internal bleeding.
