North Lauderdale, FL – Dwayne Toomer Killed in Crash on N State Rd 7

Miramar, FL - Two Juveniles Injured in Car Accident on County Line Rd.

North Lauderdale, FL (February 4, 2021) – A man from Lauderhill has lost his life after being involved in an accident this past Saturday morning in North Lauderdale. Reports indicate that at around 2:20 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, first responders in Broward received a call concerning a two-car crash in the 5300 block of North State Road 7.

Sheriff’s deputies with the Broward Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene along with paramedics. Preliminary investigations found that 57-year-old Dwayne Toomer was driving his 1994 GMC Safari Van when he drove into the left turning lane at Lakeside Drive. While turning left, Toomer drove into the path of a 2016 Mercedes being driven by one Sheldon Milwood, 32, of Miramar.

Milwood was headed south on North State Road 7. The two vehicles were involved in a T-bone collision that caused a passenger in Toomer’s van to be ejected from the vehicle. They were identified as 20-year-old Oakland Park resident Destiny Ross.

Tamarac Fire Rescue along with North Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to the site of the accident in order to assist those with injuries. All three individuals involved in the collision required transportation to area hospitals for treatment. Toomer later succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

An investigation into the details of the incident will be carried out by area authorities.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Dwayne Toomer at this time. Our thoughts are with everyone involved.

These collisions can take place for a number of different reasons, but the current leading cause of car accidents in Florida is distracted driving, specifically texting and driving, which accounts for approximately 16% of the fatal accident rate in Florida. Speeding is another leading cause of Florida auto accidents, causing 426 fatal auto accidents in Florida in 2017. This is approximately 14% of the statewide accident fatality rate. These are both unfortunately negligent human behaviors that can easily be prevented with mindfulness and increased attention while driving. It is important to stay alert, aware, and sober while driving in order to keep yourself and others safe while on the road.
