Broward Co, FL - UPDATE: Two Arrested in Fatal Work Zone Crash on I-95 at Sample Rd

Broward Co, FL (June 4, 2021) – A Florida man and woman were both arrested after a hit-and-run crash that occurred early Thursday, June 3, left an Interstate 95 worker dead.

Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol said that Victor Ocampo and Natalia Londono Mejia were arrested late that afternoon after authorities tracked down the car allegedly responsible for striking and killing the 37-year-old construction worker in Fort Lauderdale.

The worker, who has not been identified by authorities, was hit around 3:00 a.m. while doing work on a road work sign. Ocampo and Mejia hit the worker just south of Sample Road in the northbound express lane. The victim died at the scene, per a statement from FHP troopers.

Ocampo and Mejia admitted that they were in the car when the crash occurred, though each of them denied being behind the wheel. Authorities believe that Ocampo, who does not have a valid license, was driving. However, the investigation is ongoing at this time.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim.

Fatal Workplace Accidents in Florida

Factory and construction workers know all too well that their jobs come with a long list of hazards. A job site is typically a dangerous environment due to the dangerous equipment and tools, large machinery, and the long, exhausting hours they are required to work. These various dangers are made worse by inadequate safety measures, defective equipment, or one of the hundreds of other factors that can cause workplace accidents, including drivers who strike roadway workers or construction accidents involving large commercial vehicles. These injuries and even fatalities are equally devastating to workers as well as those who depend on them.

If you recently lost a loved one to wrongful death in Florida, the law entitles the personal representative of their estate, typically a surviving parent, child, or spouse, to file a wrongful death suit in state court for financial compensation for monetary damages.
