Performer And Students Injured At Pep Rally

Pep rallies are supposed to get a crowd fired up, but a local school got more fired up than they anticipated when a fire breather act at a St. Patrick’s Day pep rally went drastically wrong. According to this story, a part of the entertainment for the rally was a fire breather who, during his final stunt in the performance, accidentally lost control of the stunt and set himself on fire. He suffered extensive burns and was taken to the hospital for medical attention. Several students were also injured as a result and required a trip to the hospital for smoke inhalation and other injuries; a number of other students also required medical attention at the scene for less serious injuries.

Burn Injuries And Their Causes

Burn injuries can be the result of many different accidents and to several different degrees. Burns are typically classified as first, second, or third degree burns; they are also sometimes classified as superficial, partial-thickness, and full-thickness burns. Each type of classification refers to how deep or damaging the burn is. A first degree, or superficial, burn usually affects only the top layer of skin and typically heals quickly. Second degree, or partial-thickness, burns affect not just the top layer of skin but the underlying layer(s) as well and cause blisters. They vary in how extensively they may damage the skin and how much scarring or disfigurement may result. Third degree, or full-thickness, burns are the most extensive; they extend deep into the skin and even down into bone and nerves. They may require surgery to repair and usually result in more extensive scarring and disfigurement. Aside from classification by severity, burns can also be classified by their cause, including scalds, contact burns, chemical burns, electrical burns, and radiation burns, among others.

Scarring And Disfigurement

As discussed above, more severe burns can often result in scarring and permanent disfigurement. These types of injuries are often extremely painful and cause constant suffering. These permanent damages may require the burn victim to have expensive reconstructive or plastic surgery to correct them. Alternately, the victim may have permanent scarring or disfigurement, which would likely affect their quality of life – their ability to enjoy life’s everyday activities and even to work and earn a living.
