What Are The Chances?

Often times, an accident is just that – an accident. No one can predict it will happen, and there is not much to prevent its occurrence. At first glance, that is exactly what happened recently to cause a popular South Dade high school principal severe injuries, when a South Florida high school principal struck by out-of-control driver driver lost control while driving and struck him with her car. According to a witness, the man pushed another man out of the way of the vehicle and potentially saved that man’s life before being struck himself, an impact that shattered both of his legs. Reports indicate that as a result of the accident the principal underwent surgery and was fighting for his life. Taking a closer look at some of the allegations made about the driver and her driving record, one could argue that the accident’s occurrence is not altogether surprising. According to police records, the driver has been cited for various driving infractions over the years and her driving record was far from clean, but no citations had been issued as a result of this accident – at least not yet.

Driving Behavior And Its Contribution To The Likelihood Of A Traffic Accident

In this case, the driver’s citations may or may not have been associated with actual driving skill or bad driving practices, but often times citations will be based on driving in a particular way, such as recklessly or aggressively. Aggressive driving, in particular, is a practice that often results in accidents and injuries to those involved in them. A publication by the AAA Foundation notes that aggressive driving ranks high among concerns of Americans, despite the lack of understanding at the time about how this type of driving behavior impacts accident rates and its overall effect on traffic safety. Defining aggressive driving is not easy and may fit into the category of being something that you ‘know when you see it.’ AAA suggests that aggressive driving includes any unsafe driving behavior intentionally performed with a disregard for others’ safety. Some of these actions may include tailgating, changing lanes or passing other vehicles improperly, driving recklessly, not yielding right of way, ignoring traffic signs and laws, speeding and racing, and turning improperly or without signals.
