Safety Improvements For I-95 Express Lanes

Making improvements to highway conditions is an effort that benefits everyone – making the roadways safer helps to save lives and minimize the severity of traffic accidents. Keeping traffic running smoothly is one way to maximize safety on the roads and, according to a recent news story, Broward County is making such an effort by installing plastic poles along the express lanes on Interstate 95 within that county. Though these newly installed poles may be an adjustment for those not accustomed to seeing them on the highway, they should help to keep traffic running more smoothly.

Lane Diving

The installation of plastic poles is in response to the problem of ‘lane diving’ – the practice of weaving in and out of the sectioned-off lane. The lane diving is a major cause of accidents that take place on these highways; Broward County’s installation project involves using poles that are made of sturdier design that will be less easily knocked over by vehicles. Importantly, another component of the improvement process is the widening of the buffer area between the express lane and the regular lane that should help drivers to avoid the poles.

Drive Safe 95 Express Project

These measures – the pole installation, the buffer area widening, and the crackdown by Florida’s law enforcement on unsafe driving practices such as lane diving – are all part of the Drive Safe 95 Express project aimed at improving safety on the roads in Southern Florida. Interstate 95 is the busiest highway in Southern Florida and there is a need to keep it as safe as possible. Some of the advice offered as a part of this initiative regarding usage of the express lanes includes:

  • Plan ahead by using only the specified entrances and exits;
  • Drive at a safe speed;
  • Stay alert and follow signs;
  • Do not weave in and out of express lanes; and
  • Do not try to enter the express lanes when they are closed for accidents or maintenance.

Driver Responsibility

Regardless of how many changes in highway safety features and improvements in road design, what is most important is for drivers to remember that these roadway improvements – whether it is poles separating express lanes from the regular lanes or any other type of improvement – are just tools and that it is ultimately up to drivers themselves to drive responsibly and follow the rules of the road.
