Recovering Damages for Speeding-Related Accidents

Speeding

Most people are aware that engaging in certain types of behavior while behind the wheel can significantly increase a person’s risk of being involved in an accident. For instance, driving while distracted, violating traffic laws, or driving while under the influence are dangerous to anyone on the road. A new study, however, has revealed that speeding may actually be the most dangerous activity in which a motorist can engage, as it has proven to be one of the leading cause of fatal car accidents in the country.

Those who are involved in accidents caused by speeding are often eligible to recover damages compensating them for their losses, so if you were hurt in a car crash because the at-fault party was speeding, it is important to contact an experienced auto accident lawyer who can advise you as to your next steps.

What the New Data Reveals

Published earlier this summer by an insurance-data service, the recently published study explored the dangers of speeding in the U.S. and found that:

  • Speeding causes more deadly car crashes in the U.S. than distracted or impaired driving;
  • Speeding accounted for 22 percent of all fatal crashes in the country; and
  • Speeding is the leading cause of fatal collisions in as many as 35 states.

Although Florida was ranked as one of the safest states when it comes to speeding, these numbers are still cause for concern, especially amongst those who spend a significant amount of time on the road. Fortunately for those who are involved in accidents caused by someone else’s decision to exceed the speed limit, injured parties can recover damages compensating them for related medical bills, lost wages, property damage, and pain and suffering.

The Consequences of Speeding

Speeding doesn’t always result in an accident, but it does increase the chances of being involved in a collision. In most cases, this is due to the fact that speeding:

  • Creates a greater potential for losing control of the vehicle;
  • Reduces the effectiveness of seat belts and air bags;
  • Increases the stopping distance after a motorist perceives impending danger; and
  • Increases the degree of crash severity.

All of these factors make it much more likely that a person who is speeding will cause an accident. This can have devastating consequences for anyone else who happens to be on the road, as collisions caused by speeding tend to result in particularly severe injuries due to the increased force of impact. Tragically, the most severe injuries often prove fatal. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that as many as 9,717 people were killed in speeding-related traffic accidents in 2017 alone.
