Car Accident Critically Injures High School Principal

South Dade Senior High School’s principal faces a much different life as a result of a recent car accident, in which he was struck by a woman alleged to be driving her truck at a high rate of speed while under the influence of alcohol. According to the police reports, the driver struck a median and a fence before hitting the principal, who was coaching his son’s Little League team at the time. The principal was critically injured and he, along with another victim, were transported to the hospital, where the principle ended up needing to have both of his legs amputated.

Risks During And After The Amputation Surgery

With any surgery, risks are present. The National Institute of Health lists some of the risks that are associated with any type of surgery, including blood clots, breathing problems, and bleeding. With an amputation surgery, there are also specific risks after the procedure which include possibly losing the range of motion  in the joint closest to the amputation site, infection, unhealed or improperly healed wounds, and a unique risk called phantom sensation – feeling like the limb is still there, even though it is gone. Pain associated with this phantom sensation is known as phantom pain.

Physical And Emotional Recovery After An Amputation

Catastrophic accidents such as these will result in lifelong changes not only for the victim, but for his or her family and friends as well. Though the initial physical recuperation from an amputation may be fairly quick, and, barring complications, in some cases the victim may only need to spend a week or two in the hospital, the rehabilitation afterward can take a long time. Learning to live without the limb or to adjust to a prosthetic limb involves relearning basic skills such as walking or dressing and, aside from dealing with the physical injuries, amputees often also must recover emotionally from the loss of the limb. While modern medicine has come a long way and amputation is something from which most people can recover and resume an active life, many factors will influence the extent to which this is possible for injury victims including overall health and age.
