Woman Dies During Cosmetic Surgery Procedure

A woman in her early thirties has died after undergoing a popular cosmetic surgery procedure in West Miami during which she developed cardiac arrest. According to reports, the woman was having a tummy tuck performed when her heart stopped. She was transported to a local medical center, but she was not able to be resuscitated and did not survive. Family members are in disbelief that the young, healthy woman is gone and are searching for answers. Police are investigating the tragic death to determine exactly what happened.

Cosmetic Surgery – A Serious Operation

Many people discount cosmetic surgery as being less serious than it really is; the fact is, however, that it is a real surgery, with real risks, for which the same precautions and considerations must be taken not only by the patient him or herself but by the medical professionals who are performing the procedure as well. In this tummy tuck incident, the patient was believed to be in good health at the time of the procedure and representatives state that pre-op procedures were all performed. It is important to note, however, that this medical procedure – just like any other operation – comes with certain risks and potential complications.

The Risks Of Cosmetic Surgery

Prior to making a decision to proceed with cosmetic surgery, potential patients need to be aware of the risks. Medical professionals need to be forthcoming with the information about what to expect and what potential complications may occur; a failure to disclose all of the information about the risks and complications of a procedure could potentially give rise to malpractice issues. Some of the biggest factors that can affect the chance of complications after any type of surgery can be a history of medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity, or disease. Many times there is not much that can be done to chance the history of medical conditions, but one other factor that can be controlled by the patient is smoking, a factor known to increase risk and interfere with the healing process after surgery. Complications that may arise after any type of surgery can include:

  • Anesthesia-related issues such as pneumonia or blood clots;
  • Infections;
  • Scarring;
  • Fluid build up;
  • Bleeding;
  • Skin breakdown;
  • Nerve damage; and
  • Organ damage.

Any of these complications can lead to a need for additional medical attention, treatment, or even more surgery to correct and repair and, in some cases, the complications can be severe enough to cause permanent injury or even death.
