The Fun Of Flying High

trampoline2Many kids and adults alike have grown to enjoy using trampolines and bounce houses, whether during a birthday party or just an afternoon activity with friends or family. The popularity of these activities has increased greatly over recent years and, along with that increased popularity, a rise in the number of injuries suffered while participating in these activities has also occurred. Just as we were warned about the dangers of jumping on the bed and bumping our heads, we must be aware of the safety issues surrounding participating in activities such as trampolines and bounce houses. The types of injuries suffered in accidents involving these activities can include minor scrapes and bruises or broken bones, but more severe injuries such as those involving the head and neck are also on the rise.

Studying The Studies

As accident rates increase, more medical experts have advocated against these activities. While the importance of exercise cannot be downplayed, the risks of serious injuries such as spinal cord injuries or bones broken badly enough to require surgery must be considered by those who use trampoline parks – and their parents. One medical professional who examined the findings of studies conducted on the safety of trampoline parks and risks of these activities notes that even when safety measures are in place, risks of injury cannot be completely avoided.

Pediatricians’ Recommendations

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has something to say about the recreational use of trampolines – in fact, they are generally against it. If children are permitted to engage in these activities, their recommendations include protective padding and constant supervision, preferably by a trained instructor. Children should never be allowed to jump more than one at a time and they should not perform flips, somersaults, or other acrobatic maneuvers. Many people, particularly those who own or manage the trampoline parks, may argue that these activities are as safe as other types of sports, but as more accidents occur and the legal system analyzes cases in which victims suffer devastating injuries as a result of these activities, the safety of these facilities becomes more important to consider.
