South Florida Construction Project Expected To Create Jobs

The South Florida area is growing all the time, continually adding to its list of amenities and attractions for both residents and visitors alike. New retail outlets, restaurants and housing options are springing up all over the Miami and Fort Lauderdale area, which provides innumerable employment opportunities for South Floridians in all sectors of the workforce, even from the very beginning of the new venture. A recent article describes how construction has begun at the new Miami World Center, which is expected to become a world-class destination that will offer retail stores, dining venues such as outdoor cafes, bars, and restaurants, entertainment options, and a residential tower housing luxury residences, condos and apartments. According to one representative for the venture, the project will result in many employment opportunities and it is expected that a quarter of the employees will be Miami-Dade County residents.

New Construction Leads To Opportunities For New Jobs – And Also For Construction Accidents

It is to be expected that the opportunities for employment will not be limited to after the project is completed, but from the very start, as new construction means job opportunities for those working in the construction industry. Someone has to lay the foundation, construct the building, install the plumbing and electrical systems, and everything else that goes into new commercial construction. Many opportunities for work will arise – but this also means many opportunities for the types of accidents that are ever-present in the world of construction. The construction industry is inherently dangerous, and while we can remain hopeful that the Miami World Center construction will be accident-free, if history is any indication, there will likely be some level of accident activity associated with the venture.

What Types Of Accidents Are Most Common In The Construction Industry?

The United States Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sets the standards for and oversees workplace safety issues. The Administration’s website offers a wealth of information about the topic including statistics on various workplace safety concerns. One such bit of information is a statistic on the most common types of construction accidents. It notes that over 20 percent of worker fatalities in 2014 were in the construction industry; it further notes that the “Fatal Four” leading causes of deaths that occur on construction sites were falls, electrocutions, being struck by objects, and being caught in or between items. OSHA continually offers programs and training to raise awareness about these issues and to promote safe workplace practices in an attempt to cut these numbers of fatalities.
