Road Trip Tips To Help You Avoid A Florida Car Accident This Summer

RoadTripPlanning

Yearly road trips are a summer tradition for many families, many of whom come to Florida to visit its famous beaches, theme parks, and balmy weather. Unfortunately, with more people on the road, comes a higher risk of being involved in a car accident. Because summer road trips are so dangerous, we’ve included a few tips that can help you stay safe this summer.

Road Risks in the Summer

When it comes to traveling in the summer, there are a few factors that increase the likelihood that a person will be involved in an accident. There are, for instance, usually more teen drivers on the road during the summer, when they are out of school. Teen drivers are inexperienced and also tend to be more easily distracted and risk-prone. There is also more holiday drinking during the summer months on Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day weekends. Alcohol can impair judgment and poses a major risk to anyone on the road. Aside from the typical risks of driving in the summer months, motorists who drive in Florida in the summer should keep an eye out for slick roads during the rainy season and the presence of more motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Vehicle Maintenance

If you’re planning on putting some miles on your vehicle this summer, you’ll want to make sure that your car is in good working condition by getting your oil changed, checking your belts and

hoses, and checking your tires. Checking your tires is especially important, as the Florida heat can significantly increase wear and tear, making blow-outs more likely. To avoid this, you should be sure to check that:

  • Your tires are filled to the manufacturer’s recommended inflation pressure;
  • Your treads are at least 2/32 of an inch deep; and
  • Your tires don’t need to be replaced.

Finally, be sure to verify all of your fluid levels and to check your battery, lights, and signals before you leave on any long trips.

Keep an Eye Out for Driver Distraction or Fatigue

Drivers on long road trips are at a heightened risk of driver distraction. Besides being prone to daydreaming or falling asleep at the wheel, drivers who aren’t familiar with the area may become lost in an unfamiliar area. Appointing a passenger to assist you with directions can help keep you from having to check the GPS and take your eyes off the road.

Stocking Your Vehicle

If you’re planning a road trip in Florida this summer, make sure that your vehicle is fully-stocked. Keep your cell phone and charger handy, as well as a first aid kit, flashlight, flares, jumper cables, tire pressure gauge, a jack for changing tires, a spare tire, basic repair tools, water, emergency blankets, and non-perishable food and medicines. Remain aware of the weather, traffic, and road conditions and try to plan ahead so that you have plenty of time to get to your destination.
