Pedestrian Killed During Drunk Driver’s Wild Ride

South Florida is a notoriously difficult place for pedestrians. Most metropolitan areas in the world with a population comparable to that of Miami and its suburbs, which sprawl across several counties, have more robust public transportation options. We do have commuter trains, but you do not have to follow the news especially carefully to find out that there is insufficient infrastructure to prevent pedestrians from walking across the tracks and running into danger. Few would be bold enough to try to cross I-95 on foot, but some of the roads that run parallel to it have become famous for their frequent pedestrian fatalities. Streetlights seem to be no match for the darkness of South Florida’s roads. Alcohol and drugs are a factor in a disproportionate number of the accidents where a car strikes a pedestrian, as they account for about a third of all motor vehicle accidents that result in death or bodily injury. At Fault Driver Struck Three Vehicles and a Pedestrian Before Arrest
In May 2020, most people in South Florida were at home, doom scrolling on their phones, or perhaps sitting in lawn chairs on their driveways, contemplating how the day when iguanas seemed to outnumber humans in Miami had come sooner than anyone had expected. Not everyone was at home, though. A woman dropped off her children at a babysitter’s house in Loxahatchee early in the evening; no one is sure of the details of what happened next, but by 8:00, she was drunk and going for a wild ride.
At 8:15 p.m., a 2019 Jeep Wrangler was speeding down Southern Boulevard; another driver called police to report what appeared to be drunk driving. Before the police could arrive at the scene, though, she T-boned a car at Haverhill Road and Belvedere Road. According to witnesses, she briefly got out of the car to see if anyone was injured, but then she got back into her car and drove away before police arrived.
About 20 minutes later, she struck a pedestrian and did not stop. The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries. By this time, the police were in pursuit, and as Sobrino drove away, the hood of her car opened in front of her windshield, blocking her view of the road. Soon, she crashed into two parked cars, and that was when the police caught up to her and arrested her. At the time of her arrest, her blood alcohol content (BAC) was 0.17 percent, more than twice the legal limit. As of the most recently published news reports, she was facing criminal charges for DUI, vehicular homicide, and leaving the scene of an accident.
