Types of spinal injuries

A spinal cord injury occurs when a sudden blow, jolt or penetrating injury to the spine fractures, dislocates, crushes or compresses your vertebrae or severs your spinal cord. The extent of a spinal injury depends on where the injury occurs on the spine and whether the injury is complete or partial. In a complete spinal injury, you may lose almost all feeling and motor function below the injury site. In an incomplete spinal injury, you may still have some sensory or motor function.

At Boone and Davis, we help victims recover compensation for every type of catastrophic injury to the back that results from the negligence, wrongdoing or default of others, including:

  • Paralysis: Paralysis occurs below the site of an injury to the spine. Paraplegia is the paralysis of the lower part of your body, including both legs. Tetraplegia, also known as quadriplegia, is the paralysis of both legs and both arms. Paralysis generally occurs when there is a complete injury to the neck or lower back.

  • Anterior cord syndrome: Anterior cord syndrome results from an injury to motor and sensory pathways of the anterior spinal cord, which supplies the spine with blood. You may still feel some sensation but may be unable to feel much more than that or to move.

  • Central cord syndrome: Central cord syndrome occurs when there is damage to nerve fibers that carry information from the brain to the spinal cord. When the central cord is damaged, it may result in paralysis or loss of movement in the arms and hands. There may also be minor loss of movement in the legs, some sensory loss and loss of bladder control.

  • Posterior cord syndrome: Posterior cord syndrome is caused by damage to the posterior spinal cord. It may result in sensory loss, and it may also cause some electrical sensations down the back to the legs.

  • Brown-Séquard syndrome: Brown-Séquard syndrome occurs when the spine in the back or neck is injured, often by a penetrating wound. You may lose some movement and sensation below the injury site on the side where the injury occurs. You may also lose the sensation of pain and temperature on the side of your body opposite the injury.

  • Cauda equina lesion: Cauda equina syndrome is caused by the loss of function in nerve roots in the lower back. It happens when an accident causes a slipped or herniated disc or arachnoiditis, which is inflammation of a membrane that protects the nerves of the spine. A cauda equina lesion may cause lower back pain, leg pain, weakness in the feet and ankles, bladder paralysis, and possibly some loss of senses, movement and reflexes.

Determining eligibility for filing a claim

To file a claim for a back injury, you must have some evidence that it was caused by the negligence, wrongdoing or fault of others. If you have a pre-existing condition, you may still be able to recover damages if sufficient evidence exists that the accident made your condition worse or caused an additional injury. Our experienced Fort Lauderdale spinal injury attorneys thoroughly examine your case to determine whether you have a possible claim and how you should proceed. We provide highly accessible and compassionate assistance for victims injured in all types of cases, including the most common causes of spinal injury:

  • Motorcycle and car accidents cause more than 40 percent of spinal injuries.
  • Falls cause 25 percent of spinal injuries.
  • Acts of violence, including those resulting from negligent security, cause up to 15 percent of spinal injuries.
  • Sports activities, including diving in shallow pools, cause about 8 percent of spinal injuries.
