Approximately 34,000 People Sustain Lawnmower Injuries Every Year

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that every year 34,000 people suffer lawnmower injuries that require emergency room treatment. Such severe injuries as lacerations, amputations, crush injuries and death commonly result when:

  • A riding lawnmower tips over and pins the driver
  • The rider falls or is thrown from the equipment
  • The victim falls underneath the lawnmower
  • The lawnmower runs over a child

To minimize these risks, the CPSC recommends that manufacturers install important safety features, including:

  • Operator presence control, which halts the rotating blades when sensors detect that the driver is no longer sitting in the mower’s seat.

  • Increased seatback height, which helps the rider remain in a safe seated position.

  • Dynamic turn and sudden traction performance control technology, whichimproves the stability of the riding mower to prevent tipping.

  • Power blade shut off during backup, whichdisengages blades when the machine is in reverse gear.

The CPSC also gives advice for safe use of lawnmower equipment. It recommends users:

  • Keep your hands and feet away from rotating parts.
  • Only permit responsible adults who understand operating instructions to use the equipment.
  • Before starting to mow, clear the area of obstructions, including toys, rocks and wires.
  • Clear the area of bystanders, particularly children.
  • Look for children and objects before and while backing up.
  • Use caution while approaching blind spots — like shrubs or corners — where children might be or run out of.
  • Do not carry passengers on the machine.
  • Take turns slowly to avoid tipping.
  • Mow up and down slopes, never across.
  • Prior to dismounting the mower, disengage the blade, stop the engine and remove the key.
  • Never leave the lawnmower unattended and running.
  • Make sure the machine is completely stopped before cleaning or removing parts.
  • Use the lawn equipment only during daylight hours or under sufficient artificial light.

Well-designed and properly manufactured equipment that is appropriately used provides a helpful tool for keeping your lawn beautiful. However, the spinning blades and heavy body can create serious hazards to the rider and children in the area. If you or your child suffered a lawnmower injury, consult with a Fort Lauderdale personal injury lawyer who can investigate whether a product defect or other negligence contributed to the accident.
