Pembroke Pines, FL – Fatal Hit & Run Pedestrian Crash on Orange Avenue

Miami, FL - Pedestrian Critically Hurt in Venetian Causeway Crash

Pembroke Pines, FL (April 9, 2021) – A college student lost his life in a fatal hit-and-run collision on a roadway in Pembroke Pines on April 2. According to Florida officials, the incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. when 19-year-old Anthony Mejias was walking on Orange Avenue.

Officers from the Florida Highway Patrol stated that Mejias was walking when he was struck by a vehicle that then fled the scene without stopping to render aid. Mejias was taken to Orlando Health Medical Center where he later passed away.

The portion of the roadway where the crash took place was blocked off while responders worked to secure the scene. Traffic delays ensued for some time during the investigation and local motorists were urged to avoid the area.

The deceased pedestrian was reported missing by his mother, Vivian Blanco, just a day before the fatal crash occurred. Police continue to investigate the details of the collision.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.

Traffic Accidents in Florida

Along with distracted driving, a high rate of pedestrian fatalities is caused by alcohol use on the part of either the pedestrian or the driver. The majority of critical pedestrian accidents take place in metropolitan areas after dark. Most of these accidents also occur mid-block instead of in intersections. This suggests that most pedestrian fatalities happen due to an inadequate number of crosswalks and traffic control tools.
