Miami Shores, FL - One Jogger Killed, Another Hurt in Crash on NE 107th St.

Miami Shores, FL (October 17, 2020) – Two joggers were struck by a vehicle in Miami Shores on Thursday, October 15th. The crash happened at the intersection of Northeast 107th Street and Sixty Avenue just before 7:00 a.m.

The Miami-Dade Police Department responded to the scene of the crash. Officers say that two women, both in their 40s, were jogging near the intersection close to Miami Country Day School when they were struck by a 2017 BMW. The driver of the BMW remained at the scene following the crash. According to a report, one of the joggers was killed as a result of the crash. The other jogger sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Both joggers were crossing the street at the intersection with they were struck. Neither of the victims has been identified at this time.

Police are still investigating the collision but have not said whether the driver will face any charges in connection with the crash.

We wish to extend our most sincere condolences to the victim who lost her life in this crash. Our thoughts are with the other jogger as we hope for a full recovery.

Pedestrian Accidents in Florida

Joggers and other pedestrians are on the roadways of Florida and throughout the country on a daily basis. Pedestrians are entitled to the same protection as motorists and many of the same laws that apply to people in vehicles also apply to joggers and pedestrians. Cars are required to yield the right of way to joggers and are also required to stop at all stop signs and crosswalks when they see a jogger or pedestrian who is legally crossing the street. Unfortunately, far too many motorists fail to comply with the law and the result is a serious crash with life-changing consequences. In 2019, the United States saw the most reported pedestrian fatalities in more than 30 years, with over 6,500 deaths reported. In Florida, there are about two fatal pedestrian accidents each day.

A Florida pedestrian accident can affect both the pedestrian as well as their family. When a pedestrian crash occurs, police must carefully investigate the scene in order to determine who should be held responsible. Officers will look at the position of the vehicle, whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk, damage to the car, and will also take statements from any witnesses who saw the crash occur. Police will then use this information to determine liability. If the driver was at fault, they may be charged for their actions which led up to the crash.

If you or a loved one has been affected by a pedestrian accident in Florida, you may have valuable legal rights. Under Florida law, you could be entitled to receive compensation for pain and suffering, medical bills, loss of consortium, punitive damages, and possibly more. It is very important to seek the services of a skilled Florida pedestrian accident attorney if you find yourself in this situation.
