Indian River County, FL - Bicyclist Killed in Crash on State Road A1A

Indian River County, FL (May 29, 2021) – Police in Indian River County responded to the scene of a fatal crash involving a bicyclist on Saturday morning. The accident took place on State Road A1A near Wildlife Way and the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge.

The Florida Highway Patrol was called to the scene of the crash. According to troopers, a 63-year-old man from Vero Beach was riding his bicycle on A1A. At the same time, the driver of a Nissan Altima was also traveling on the same road. The driver failed to maintain their lane, causing the car to swerve onto the shoulder and strike the bicyclist. The man, who was not identified, was taken to Sebastian Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. The Altima driver was not injured.

The northbound lanes of the roadway were closed while an investigation into the accident was ongoing. Troopers have not said whether any charges are expected to be filed.

We wish to extend our most sincere condolences to the victim’s family following this tragic bicycle crash in Indian River County.

Florida Bicycle Accidents

When we think of traffic crashes, we tend to think of traditional vehicles like trucks, cars, and motorcycles. However, bicycle accidents in Florida also result in a number of injuries and deaths each year. According to some more recent statistics, there are more than 6,000 reported bicycle accidents in our state and approximately 150 fatalities reported as a result of these accidents. Bicyclists are at great risk of death or serious injury when they are involved in a crash. Bicycles offer no protection from the force of the collision and riders are often thrown from their bikes in the aftermath of the crash.

Following a Florida bicycle accident, it is important to have a full understanding of your legal rights. In many cases, the accident is caused by the actions of a negligent driver. Drivers who are distracted or otherwise driving recklessly, are often the cause of the accident. This results in injuries or death for an innocent victim. In this instance, you should have a skilled and experienced attorney working to protect your family.
